Biogen has opened Phase 3 studies of salanersen, a once-a-year SMA treatment. The first participants have been dosed in the US and Japan.

On September 11, 2026, the FDA approved Isembyld (apitegromab), the first SMA therapy that targets muscle directly. In the EU the application was withdrawn and will be resubmitted.
